Fort Steele
The much anticipated Grade 5 trips to Fort Steele are coming up in May. Each grade 5 class goes as a homeroom. At this time we can let you know the scheduled dates for each class. There will be parent information night in April. If you wish to be a parent volunteer, the volunteer committee sent out communication about volunteer opportunities that you should reply to. Please mark the following dates on your calendar.

Me to We Gummy Bear Jar Guessing Station
Hello Everyone!
Students from the Me to We elective want to hold a seed drive in an effort to stop food insecurity. There is going to be a gummy bear jar guessing station outside of the office from March 4-6 at lunch recess. If you would like a chance to win the jar, please bring donations of seed packets! Each pack will get you one guess, and you can guess as many times as you want! Please help and support our cause! We will be donating these seeds to The Drop In Centre, The Mustard Seed, and The Calgary Food Bank so their users can participate in community gardens. Thank you for your support!
We would really appreciate your support!

Hockey in PE
You are starting a Hockey unit in PE tomorrow that will continue until March break. Each class will have 4 days, 3 of which are outdoors. You have been asked to bring (borrow or rent) skates and a helmet for your classes on the ice. I've attached a schedule of when classes will be outdoors in PE.

Me to We elective are hosting a campaign to end hunger
Dear Connect Students and Parents,
Students from the Me to We elective are hosting a campaign to end hunger. 126,000 Calgarians visited the food bank last year, 7.2% of Alberta’s have food insecurity, yet we live in one of the richest countries in the world (8th place). People don’t realize hunger is everywhere, not just in poorer countries, which means we need to take action!
We challenge each class to bring non-perishable food items which are as healthy as possible.
Here are a list of healthier choices for donation items:
- dried fruits
- nuts and trail mixes
- peanut butter
- canned vegetables
- healthier cereals with less sugar (Raisin Bran, Fibre One, Kashi, All bran etc.)
- canned soups with less salt
- canned fruits
These items are much needed by the Food bank
The class with the most contributions will be featured in the Spectrum. Please join our campaign to end hunger. Please bring your contributions to school between Wednesday Feb.19th to Friday Feb 28th.
Thank you

Grade 5 Peace Festival Reminders
There is quite the buzz and excitement in the school this week as Peace Festival begins! As one student so eloquently put it, “Peace Festival is a time for fun and a time for thinking about others.” Over the next week the grade 5 classes will be participating in many different activities. This year at Peace festival students are able to purchase some things when they visit the gym. There is an opportunity to make-your-own Peace Festival button ($1), send candy grams ($0.50) and purchase many different items at the market. Baking, crafts, and jewelry will be available if you have some last minute shopping to do. Quarters, loonies and toonies are preferred, wherever possible! All money collected will be going to support 2 local charities
The grade 5 classes are skating in the morning, on Wednesday, Dec.18. Students will need skates and helmets for this activity and they are encouraged to bring their own re-usable mug. The grade 9 organizers will have hot chocolate available. Parents are welcome to join us for skating and Peace Festival activities. Peace Festival Closing Ceremonies are held Thursday, Dec 18 at 2:00 if you wish to join us.

staying in the loop with your child's grade 5 work
We recommend having your child show you his or her user name and password for Edmodo, so you can go over assignments and supporting documents together. There are Edmodo groups for Humanities, Math, Science, Phys Ed, and PVA, and your child will be a great guide to tour you through his or her work.
Halloween Party for grades 4, 5, and 6
The Me to We elective will be organizing a Halloween Dance Party in the gym for grades 4 - 6 during lunch time on Thursday, October 31st. There will be a modified lunch time for grade 4-6 students that day to allow them enough time to eat lunch, change into costumes (optional), and participate in the dance.
This elective is currently focusing on the topic of poverty and homelessness in our city. Therefore, we are asking all students to consider bringing in a food bank donation to the dance, your participation is greatly appreciated. (Food bank items are optional)
